| Spotlight Race: FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA SANTANDER 2012
|
For many the Spanish Grand Prix marks the start of the Formula 1 season proper as teams gear up for their first European race of the year. Teams are very familiar with the Circuit de Catalunya as this is the track where they spend the majority of the winter testing and they will be anxious to see what progress, if any, they have made in the first four races of the season.
Barcelona is one of the best-known tracks as it is the venue for a lot of testing during the winter months, and is popular with teams given its high-downforce layout, but generally it provides few overtaking opportunities, especially in the very slow final sector. Indeed, the winner generally comes from the front row so a good qualifying is essential.
The few overtaking opportunities has resulted in the DRS zone being lengthened for this year's race, while the kerb on the exit of Turn Five has been extended from last year.
