Default Hamilton plays down McLaren crisis

Lewis Hamilton has played down the extent of McLaren's problems going into the first grand prix of the 2009 season, and remains confident that the team can get its troublesome new car on the pace eventually.

McLaren has openly admitted that it will not be challenging for victory in Melbourne after a series of below-par winter performances.

A problem with the rear aerodynamics appears to be the key, with the team running a 2008 rear wing for much of testing while trying to get on top of the issue.

Although some simulations have suggested that McLaren will be among the backmarkers in Australia, Lewis does not believe the problems are that dramatic.

"Testing wasn't so bad, could have been better," he said.

"The car, whilst driving it doesn't feel so bad, generally it seems to lack a bit of pace."

He is certain that McLaren's resources will allow it to get on top of its troubles quicker than rival teams would be able to.

"We are working very hard to make up lost time and get back to the front," said Hamilton.

"We have a very good team and the ability to recover from situations like this more than others, although it's not going to be easy with the cut in testing."

He said he had no concerns about starting the season as an underdog, having previously had championship-calibre machinery.

"It's a new goal and a new challenge for us," said Hamilton.
