Default 'Massa needs to drive as soon as he can

Sir Stirling Moss believes Felipe Massa needs to get back into the ****pit of his F60 as soon as he can if he hopes to mentally come back from his Hungarian shunt.

Massa is still in a Budapest hospital recovery from the skull fractures and brain concussion he suffered when he was hit by spring that had broken loose from Rubens Barrichello's car during qualifying.

Immediately after the accident Massa underwent emergency surgery after which he was placed into a medically induced coma while there are still some concerns regarding his left eye damage.

Moss empathises with the 28-year-old having himself been put an induced coma as he recovered from his 1962 Goodwood crash. But while Moss's accident ended his career, there is hope that Massa will return to Formula One in the not-too-distant future.

"There is no way of knowing whether he can drive again at this stage," Moss told The Times. "And, even if the doctors say he is okay, only Felipe will know the answer.

"The head injury may not be what stops him but, if the sight in his eye is affected, he will have a major problem. He will have no depth of perception and that badly affects your judgment at speed in a racing car.

"But I would say to Felipe to get back into a car and drive as soon as you can. It doesn't have to be in competition, just get into the car and see what it feels like.

"Like me, Felipe knows that the accident was not his fault and that means it was nothing to do with his ability. He should not lose confidence in himself, that is crucial."
