FOTA vice-chairman John Howett has confirmed that eight of the ten Formula One teams are happy if Michael Schumacher conducts a one-off test at the wheel of Felipe Massa's F60 Ferrari.
The Italian team had made the request to the teams alliance, as well as the governing FIA and non-FOTA teams Williams and Force India, so that Schumacher has a chance to acquaint with the Maranello-built car prior to his Valencia comeback next month. "Toyota's understanding is that all FOTA teams have agreed to accept this request," Howett, also president of the Toyota team, is quoted as saying by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper. "The situation for Felipe is very unfortunate, and this is a sporting gesture which I am confident Ferrari will respect," he added. It is believed he is referring to the fact that the teams have asked Ferrari to ensure that Schumacher is simply acquainting with the red car, rather than conducting any sort of technical development work. The Telegraph said the FIA received the approval of some teams, including Red Bull, "with conditions attached. Ferrari confirmed that the request was made to the FIA and said it is "waiting for a reply." 40-year-old Schumacher lapped Ferrari's Mugello circuit nearly 70 times on Friday at the wheel of a privately-owned 2007 Ferrari prepared by the team's 'F1 Clienti' division, bypassing the rules preventing in-season testing. "It's a great thing getting back on the track with an F1 even if this was a car from 2007 from the F1 Clienti department with slicks usually used in GP2 and obviously there is no real point of reference," he is quoted as saying by the Ferrari website. "After a couple of laps I was able to drive constant times and I'm happy with the performance. Now we've got to see how my body and the muscles respond in the next days," Schumacher added. Williams have put an end to Ferrari's plans to give Michael Schumacher a one-day test in this year's F60 after Frank Williams denied the Scuderia's request.
With Schumacher set to replace Felipe Massa at this month's Valencia GP, Ferrari had written to their rivals and the FIA asking that the German be allowed to test this year's F60 despite the in-season test ban. Williams, though, have turned down the request. "While we welcome Michael Schumacher back to Formula 1, the fact is that any form of in-season circuit testing is strictly prohibited; a regulation clearly laid out by the FIA and adhered to by all of the teams," said team boss Frank Williams. "It was for this reason that Alguersuari, who drove an F1 car for the very first time in Hungary, did not have the opportunity to familiarise himself with the Toro Rosso before he made his race debut. "Williams sees no distinction between Alguersuari's situation and Schumacher's and feels that any deviation from the rule would create a precedent for the future. "In a similar situation, Williams would unhesitatingly use its current test driver. For the sake of consistency and fairness, therefore, we oppose Ferrari's proposal to test ahead of the European Grand Prix." Michael Schumacher and Ferrari have apparently accepted the fact they will not be able to test the 2009 F60 challenger prior to the seven time world champion's Formula One return in Spain later this month even if the messages coming from Maranello are far from unified...
The Italian team had asked its nine on-track rivals and the FIA for an exemption from the in-season test ban so that Schumacher may acquaint with injured Felipe Massa's car. Initially, Williams made clear its opposition to the plans, which amid the need for total unanimity was akin to a veto. According to the Bloomberg news service, Ferrari's spokesman Luca Colajanni reacted: "If Williams says this, then fair enough." Later, Red Bull's two teams Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso indicated they too would not be voting for the request for a dispensation, meaning that Schumacher's next test this week is likely to again be at the wheel of a two-year-old F2007 instead "From the beginning it was clear that in all probability there would not be a test with the new car," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said on the Blickpunkt Sport programme. However not all at Ferrari are singing from the same hymn sheet... "Guess who opposed the test with the F60? A team that hasn't won anything for years and yet didn't pass over the opportunity to demonstrate once more a lack of spirit of fair play," reads an article posted on the official Ferrari site today. "Just for the record, the Scuderia Ferrari had given its approval to let (Toro Rosso's Jaime) Alguersuari test, but it seems even in this instance someone decided to stick to the precise wording of the regulations."
