Default Webber admits he almost quit F1

Mark Webber has revealed that he would have quit Formula One if last year's RB5 had turned out to be a "sh** box" - it didn't.

After too many disappointing seasons in Formula One where Webber's talent was often muted by an unreliable car, he admits his motivation took a serious nosedive.

"Two or three years ago, I wasn't particularly enjoying it a huge amount and I wasn't a million miles away (from retirement) then," he told the Australian newspaper.

"You have to be enjoying it and you have to be motivated. That fire has to keep going."

But instead of being reignited, cold water was poured over the fire when Webber broke his leg in a mountain bike accident, prompting even more thoughts of retirement.

The Red Bull racer, though, opted to remain in Formula One in 2009, now admitting that it would have been his last year if his team had failed to produce a race winning car.

Asked point blank if he considered retiring, Webber said: "I don't know. If we had a total shit box last year, maybe.

"It was a very tough start to the year for me mentally with the accident and if that was coupled with a tough season result-wise, it might have been enough to put water on the flame, but fortunately, it was enough to put petrol on it."

The 'petrol' came in the form of two race wins and an additional six podium finishes, which saw Webber fighting for the World title. In the end he finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship and is now eagerly anticipating another competitive season with Red Bull.

"Last year was very, very important in terms of the outlook on my whole career," he said. "The fire is burning now, I am getting up each day and I care and I am taking responsibility for myself.

"I am so lucky with the guys we have now, the way we go about our racing is so bloody enjoyable and rewarding. It's got such a great balance, it's not all corporate PR stuff, Red Bull really care. They are competitive people with a fantastic balance."
