Default Renault suspended from European Grand Prix

Source: The Official Formula 1 Website

Quote:

Renault will miss the next round of the championship for allowing Fernando Alonso to leave the pits with a wheel not properly secured during Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

A mistake attaching the front-right wheel at Alonso's first stop led to it coming loose from the car once the Spaniard had returned the track. He limped back to the pits but was subsequently forced to retire due to resulting damage.

Budapest stewards decided Renault had been negligent in failing to secure the wheel, in knowingly letting Alonso leave the pits with the problem, and in failing to inform their driver of the issue.

Renault are to appeal the decision. Should that appeal fail it means Alonso and team mate Nelson Piquet will not participate in the European Grand Prix on August 21-23.

Yeah. But why such a severe decision for Renault when Red Bull were let with a fine and a 10-place penalty in the Aus GP? Vettel was running on 3 wheels with the 4th almost about to break free for so long in that race. Wasn't that dangerous enough...? Mad mad stewards..

Here as they said it was because the team knowingly sent out the car with a faulty nut apparently

They have lodged an appeal.

Quote:
Renault has appealed against Hungarian Grand Prix stewards' decision to suspend the team from the European Grand Prix on the penultimate weekend of August. The French team was thrown out of the next event on Sunday evening due to actions by the team surrounding the loss of Fernando Alonso's right-front wheel in Budapest.

With a loose wheel nut causing such a vibration that the wheel became detached from Alonso's car during the race and subsequently bouncing through the air, news was later published that the team had been suspended from taking part in the European Grand Prix next time out, meaning Spanish fans would be deprived of seeing their former double Champion hero on track.

The FIA has since received documentation stating Renault's intention to appeal the stewards' decision, with a hearing to take place within the next four weeks.

I was referring to the Vettel incident at the Australian GP. Vettel crashed with Kubica a couple of laps before chequered flag and his car sustained severe damage, with one of the front wheels uselessly attached to the car. In spite of this, he tried and managed to finish almost 2 laps behind the SC, ultimately retiring just before the end of the race. How is this safer than what Alonso did? Both Vettel and the RBR knew that the car had sustained severe damage, yet all they received as punishment was a 50K $ fine and Vettel starting 10 places behind in the next race. This is very less punishment compared to suspending a team from racing entirely.
