Default Button: Ferrari look to be the team to beat

Although Ferrari haven't topped the times at Jerez these past two weeks, Jenson Button reckons the Scuderia is the team to beat.

After a dominant display at the first outing in Valencia, where Ferrari led the way on all three days, the Italian marque has yet to end a day at Jerez in the P1 slot.

But, that doesn't mean very much as the lap times in pre-season testing aren't giving a clear picture in light of this year's ban on refuelling.

Button, though, believes based on what he has seen so far, Ferrari are looking very strong.

"I think the Ferrari is a very strong car," the reigning World Champ told Autosport. "If you look at their runs, they're very consistent. I think they have better consistency than anyone at the moment.

"It's always interesting to observe what they're up to. I think our pace is good, but there are still areas we need to work on for me to be happy with the car."

He added: "I followed a few drivers, Fernando (Alonso), Michael (Schumacher). It's always interesting to see what's happening. You never know what fuel loads people are on but you can see what sort of balance they have.

"The Mercedes to me seemed like it was a little bit twitchy at the rear and braking it looked like it was locking the rears, but if they're on 150kg it's understandable. It's interesting. The Ferrari looked good on the circuit, good consistency."

As for his new team, McLaren, Button believes they are moving in the right direction with their MP4-25.

"For me, our car over one lap is getting there. We're improving step by step. And on the long runs, we're improving every run we do," he said.
